How it works
Trading days are weekdays when U.S. equity markets are open. The counter starts from today (or tomorrow if it's already past 4 p.m. Eastern Time) and counts forward, skipping weekends and all official NYSE/Nasdaq holidays. Scheduled early-close sessions, like the day after Thanksgiving or Christmas Eve, are counted as half days (0.5).
All holiday dates are derived algorithmically each year using standard calendar rules (e.g. the Easter algorithm for Good Friday, nth-weekday formulas for floating holidays), so the site stays accurate without any ongoing maintenance.
Earnings dates start from the SEC. Every public company files its earnings releases on Form 8-K, so the site reads each company's filing history (how many days after a fiscal quarter ended it reported, on which weekday, and at what time of day) and projects that pattern onto the current quarter. When the company announces its date, in a press release or on its own investor-relations site, the estimate is upgraded to confirmed, and once the release is filed the date is marked reported. The calendar shows how often estimates have landed within 3 and 7 days of the actual date, updated as each quarter plays out.
