The status above reflects the regular session only. Pre-market and after-hours trading is available through most brokers but with lower liquidity. Overnight trading (8 p.m.–4 a.m. ET, Sunday evening through Friday morning) is newer and more limited: it runs through alternative trading systems rather than the exchanges, is offered by only some brokers, and covers a restricted list of stocks and ETFs with thin liquidity.
When is the market closed?
U.S. stock markets are open Monday through Friday, except for ten scheduled holidays each year — New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents' Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. When one of these falls on a weekend, the closure moves to the nearest weekday (Friday before a Saturday holiday, Monday after a Sunday one).
A few sessions each year also end early at 1:00 p.m. ET instead of 4:00 p.m. — typically the day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and July 3 when they land on weekdays. Note that the stock market's schedule differs from the bank calendar: on federal holidays like Veterans Day and Columbus Day, banks close but stocks trade normally.
