Is the Stock Market Open on New Year's Day?

U.S. stock markets are closed on New Year's Day. It is one of the ten official NYSE and Nasdaq holidays.

When January 1 falls on a Saturday, the exchanges do not observe a substitute day off — markets simply reopen the following Monday. When it falls on a Sunday, markets are closed the following Monday instead.

That Saturday rule makes New Year's Day the only holiday that can disappear from the market calendar entirely — in those years the exchanges observe nine holidays instead of ten. New Year's Eve, by contrast, is always a full trading session when it falls on a weekday.
